The gloss black base coat is only needed for the chrome and polished aluminum.  Every other Alclad II color can be sprayed over a flat primer.  As long as the surface is PERFECT.  I like to use Mr. Surfacer 1200 and buff it out a little with some 4000 micro mesh.  Very smooth, fills in lots of no-seeum imperfections and is a good base so the Alclad doesn't craze the plastic.  Pretty "hot" stuff. You can even vary the color of the primer coat to get panel variations.

black and alclad

 Hi guys,

Biting the bullet and going for my first natural metal finish....Now i know a black undercoat is mandatory for the Alclad line but is it a good idea for other types of aluminium paints as well...say Humbrol or MM ???

It's got to be good, as after my success with the Revell Constitution the Embassy now wants a B17G in natural metal...The other times I have crossed over to Aircraft and tried natural metal finishes they always appeared rather toylike to my eyes, even after washes,etc..

I was never able to try Alclad as it was not available here in Poland but now JADAR HOBBY has started stocking it..

              Thanks for help,

                  Jim.......ex-pat Brit in Warsaw...
