Canopy coating and painting...
Posted by MarkS1 on Wednesday, April 30, 2008 5:42 PM

Hello,

Just got back into modeling not too long ago after 15 years.  Just tried my hand at dipping a spare canopy in Future as an experiment and it came out okay, but left a distortion where it collected along the frame and would not run off.  Some questions...

1. Should the canopy be prepped before Future (like Polly prep) especially after polishing with tooth paste or something? If so, prepped with what?

2. Do you clear coat with Future before or after painting frames?  Or both?

3. Already learned about not creating bubbles in the Future before dipping.  How do you get all the Future to run out of a bubble canopy without distorting it or causing bubbles?

4. What do you mask a canopy with to paint the frames?  In the past I've used Bare Metal Foil as it renders a ridgeless result, fits into the finest recessess and can be easily trimed.  BUT it leaves glue behind that is a real bear to clean up.  Also bought Micro Mask but it seems to me the resulting line will be no different and as imperfect as painting the frame with a brush.

Thanks much!

I blow any dust that may be on them off with my airbrush. I have a wide mouth jar that I have filled with Future. I trim the clear sprues to a size that allows them to fit into the jar. I dip the parts, shake off the excess and then blot away more with a paper towel. I set the parts someplace dust free to cure. In some cases I will dip them again.

If they are unevenly coated and globby, I stripe them with Windex and repeat the process.

After they have cured for a couple of days I will start the masking process. It is important to understand your construction sequence before painting. You may have to undo a whole lot of work if you paint too soon. Getting the canopy to fit and flush mount might require some sanding and filling, so you need to have those contact surfaces free of paint and Future.

Here is a windscreen that didn't meet muster Disapprove [V] it needs some filler to eliminate the lip/gap.

Again another one (but this build did not use any fillers in the process) but if it were to be a finished model, this canopy issue would stand out like a thumb just struck with a hammer.

Mastering canopies, windshield, blisters is an art in itself. Get that licked and the rest is gravy in comparision. An otherwise perfect model can be out of the running due to the installation quality of the clear parts. Some require vast amounts of fiddling.

Applying Future is a great insurance against any scratching during assembly. If something goes a muck while assembly, it can be removed and reapplied while the canopy is attached. But as long as you have the glass parts masked you should have any problems.

Oh, I mainly use solvents to attach my windscreens, I rarely ever use CA on clear parts, but if you do Future is a must to keep the clear parts from fogging.

I've discovered something about 'dust prevention'. Just learning about the use of Future.....I was practicing dipping clear parts in what I KNOW is a dusty place and getting hit-and-miss results.

So right after dipping a clear part, I let the excess wick off on a paper towel with a dryer sheet on top of it. I mean, by definition dryer sheets are supposed to remove static.....so I have even gone as far as to let my parts sit on the dryer sheet before dipping.....not sure how much it helps, but have had no dust tracks since! Everything crystal clear and bubble free!

(I haven't actually rubbed a clear part with a dryer sheet before dipping because there are sometimes perfumes and maybe other things in those sheets that might react with the Future. I don't know.

This might be an old trick, but I don't recall reading it here.
