Weathering

In last months issue Lucianos weathering seemed easy...the question I have is when he said to use a light wash of gunmetal, when I tried it came out very dark and ultimatly changed the whole look in a negative way. How do I fix this problem? Im building a 1/48th P-38J and am fairly new to scale modeling...Its for my father for his 69th birthday and I want it to be perfect. Any help will be greatly appreciated.
