Pre-Wash Clear Coat Over Painted Resin?...
Posted by MarkS1 on Tuesday, July 1, 2008 8:54 PM

Hey,

Am ready to wash a 1/48 set of True Details P-38 wheels. They're resin, tires painted Model Master's enamel flat black and wheels painted with Alclad laquer aluminum.  Already drybrushed and intend to wash with acrylics. Questions:

1. What can I clear coat it with that'll stick to all that and the wash will not harm? Future or MM/Floquil clear?

2. After the wash can I use Dullcoat or Floquil flat clear on it?

3. OR should I just flat it now and wash and leave it go after that?

Thanks.

If the resin was clean and the painted finish is adhering well to the wheels, you can seal paint on resin with your favorite medium, Future or MM, whichever is compatible with the underlying paint.

Think of painted resin no differently than painted styrene.   Follow your normal seal/wash/dullcoat application process.   I think you will find that there is nothing all that mystical about resin parts

Hey Ed,

Thanks for the help. Am really more concerned about the Alclad aluminum laquer and probably gave too much information. Smile [:)]

One more question: is Polly Prep before painting good on resin?

Will proceed as advised!

Thanks again.

I generally clean resin parts with some good old plain dishwashing soap, in the kitchen sink, and gently scrub with an old toothbrush.    Rinse well and allow to air dry.  In the event of really stubborn mold release I may resort to Westey's Bleche White tire cleaner from the auto store.

If you have PollyPrep in your normal bag of tricks by all means use it.   Do not let not having/using the material hold you back.

If there is a good solid undercoat between the resin and the Alclad, it should not be affected by either Future or MM differently than the same products on styrene.

Lacquer on resin may be more forgiving than lacquer on raw plastic.  Hot lacquers may craze plastic but have little, if any, similar affects on resin
