which brand of paint makes the best black gloss paint?
Posted by Anonymous on Sunday, November 9, 2003 12:40 PM
is there a paint out there that matches the reflectiveness and glossness of an actual car?
i have never seen any black gloss or any gloss paint that is good enough to call, "actual metal or plastic."
i don't know i would be able to replicate a black gloss that is as good as real automobiles. even certain ball pens have a very nice gloss finish to it. but i don't know if these are black gloss or black chrome.
have anyone come across a paint that is as good as real dark metal or plastics? and a paint is actually applicable on top of plastics.

Hi,

I have sprayed Tamiya X-18 Semi-Gloss Black to my real Acura Car bumper (Plastic) to spot paint rock chips. Not only did it match perfectly it also did a amazing job!

There are a couple of things that you can do for your plastic...

You can get the actual auto paint and thin accordingly for your airbrush. Remember to read your airbrush manual to make sure you can shoot automotive lacquers.

Testors Master Master Custom Enamel System FS 17038 Gloss Black is a very nice gloss. However, like all enamel, it takes days for it to properly set.

Another way is to get your favorite black paint and then shoot a top coat of the moddlers best friend, future floor wax.

Hope that helps.

thanks for the info.

i got my airbrush from someone i knew and i don't have the airbrush manuals.
but what i use is iwata Hp-c airbrush.
do you know if this type of airbrush can shoot out real automotive paint?

do you know where i can get these paints for cheaper? i've looked it up at ebay but they cost like $35 per gallon. it might not sound expensive for the size, but i only need a small amount of gloss black.

i have never heard about the testors master custom enamel system. is it somekind of machine/device that require alot of money? or is it enamel paint?
how is different from enamel gloss black?

i've actually never used enamel paints.
are they glossier than other gloss paints?

thanks again for your reply

I tell ya, #21 Black from Humbrol is the highset gloss black I've ever seen. Again, it does take a long time to dry though. MM Classic Black is real close to it too.

thanks guys for all of these info.
i guess i will have to invest money on enamel paints then.
is the humbrol black gloss close to actual automoble car black gloss finish?
as for dss902, i really appreciate you offering your testors black gloss custom and everything, but one problem, i live in NY and not Canada. thanks alot for the offer though, i really appreicate what you are guys are doing for me.
i'll be on a search for humbrol and also testors black gloss custom paint.
oh and are these two really glossy and "reflective?" i mean, can you see your face with this stuff? or is everything a blurred image?

Yea...the're pretty glossy. Like I said, it takes them a long time to dry. In fact, for me, after a few hours, it still felt wet. Now, it's been a long time since I used the Humbrol paint so I'm going from memory. I do recall it beeing very glossy though.

does anyone know, if there is a difference in both humbrol enamel and testors enamel paints?
since they are both enamel, i didn't know if one is any better than the other one.
i could not find any of those master custom enamel system black, but i was able to find some humbrol enamel gloss black. do i need a thinner for it?

Humbrol and Testors are different formulations. I didn't have any problems mixing the two for airbrushing though. Humbrol is better for brush painting but it also takes longer than Testors to dry. For airbrushing I use either the bulk Floquil thinner or lacquer thinner for both brands of paint with excellent results. I also use the same Floquil thinner to thin Testors in the bottle when it starts to dry out. Never had a need to thin Humbrol paints in the tinlet but those tinlets are a pain to use. In the States, Humbrol is also on average $1 cheaper for the half oz. volume they come in.
