Problem with gloss coat
Posted by smoffo on Tuesday, July 8, 2008 1:51 PM

Hi

I ran into problems with getting the gloss coat on, using both vallejo model color and vallejo model air, I get a very rough surface. I have tried both laying down very thin coats and doing very wet coats.. the result is the same.

I'm using around 11psi pressure and tried to vary the distance but could not get any difference in the result. Also when I sand the flat paint with 1200grit wet and dry I still get the same effect.

Here is an example

When using future and sanded the surface with 1200grit I got a smooth surface.

Is it just that the acrylic is drying to quickly? Or is there somting else to cure this problem?

I haven't used Vallejo's clear coats, so I may be off-base on this one, but if it were another brand of clear coat, I'd be thinking it almost looks like it hasn't been thinned sufficiently.

The model air was not thinned at all as it should not need to be. Model color was tested from unthinned to 50/50 with problem getting worse the more I thinned.
