Help with Maskol & Mr Surfacer 500
Posted by cml on Friday, July 18, 2008 2:01 AM

G'day,

I need a hand with Maskol and Mr Surfacer 500.  Every time i use one or the other, i end up ruining a paint brush - i can never seem wash them out of the brush.

I've tried Methylated spirits, hot water, cold water and acrylic paint thinner (Mr Hobby GS Thinner 110).

What should be used to clean brushes when using these products????

thanks

cml

Lacquer thinner will clean both of these up.

If I recall correctly, the side of the Maskol jar says to use lacquer thinner to clean your brushes.

Mr Surfacer is a lacquer based product. Water, metho or alcohol (as in GS Mr Hobby Thinner) won't touch it.

1 litre of lacquer thinner will set you back about $10.00 at your local hardware store.

Yeah, it requires thinners with cellulose in them.

Hello cml,
Definitely Cellulose thinners to get the Maskol out of your brushes, another tip for Maskol, it'll thin with water, this is on the side of the bottle, but in such tiny lettering you might have missed it, I keep some thinned in a spare bottle, works a treat too.
All the best,

Thanks for the responses everyone.

Phil_H, i noticed from another topic you state Mr Color hobby thinner is lacquer based. I've just purchased a bottle from the local Toyworld, should do the trick. Also, just out of curiosity, if Maskol needs a lacquer thinner to clean brushes, how does it thin with water?

Will post again if i have any other problems in this area.

Maskol does thin with water. If the brush is wet, you may be able to wash it out in water. However if it's dry (and Maskol dries or at least skins over very quickly) you'll need to use lacquer thinners.

EDIT: For cleaning brushes, just use hardware store lacquer thinners - Gunze's (or any other hobby brand for that matter) is far too expensive to waste for this task.

Maskol is ammonia based, thus you can also clean your brush with ammonia. That's less toxic than celluose thinner.
