Cleaning an Omni 4000
Posted by RadMax8 on Monday, July 28, 2008 11:31 PM
Hey guys. Like an idiot, I managed to bugger up my Omni 4000 on the 3rd or 4th paint session. I pulled the needle out before I removed the paint from the color cup. Being a gravity feed brush, this was very, very bad. With my Paasche brush I use, I run a pipe cleaner through where the needle goes, and that works great. The Omni, however, has a smaller diameter needle and I cannot fit a pipe cleaner in there. Do they make smalled pipe cleaners, or better yet some reusable tool for this? Thanks in advancce, guys!

I do use pipe cleaners to clean mine.  Just have to push to get them through but they should work fine.  You can also get some tiny "Inter Dental" brushes at nearly any drug store in the aisle with the toothbrushes.  They are tiny little brushes used for cleaning between teeth but work great on airbrushes as well.  I usually cut the end off a toothpick, drill a hole in the end, and glue the wire of one of the brushes in the end to make a longer "Handle".

Sign - Ditto [#ditto]

Also, if you have a small ultrasonic cleaner, you can do a complete tear-down and put the parts in that with some Simple Green. Don't clean the o-rings or seals that way, though.

Be sure you get the paint out of the air inlet valve!

Ross, quick question about Simple Green... will it eat the rubber seals or is it the bubbles from the sonic cleaner that will do those in? I don't have a sonic cleaner but Micromark has one a decent price...Evil [}:)]

Gentlemen, thanks for your input!

The simple, green, answer is: Yes.

Simple Green by itself will not harm rubber (natural or synthetic) for short term washing or immersion (don't leave it overnight!)

BUT: Simple Green plus vibration from the ultrasonic cleaner will dissolve/erode/otherwise damage many synthetic and natural rubbers. If the paint won't come off the seal and o-rings with simple washing or scrubbing with a soft toothbrush, you can put them in the ultrasonic for a few minutes, but I wouldn't leave them for longer unless you have replacements handy.

Be sure to relubricate the o-rings and seals with silicone grease or spray (Regdab Needle Juice will do.) after you clean them.

Micromark has something at a "decent" price? Shock [:O]Evil [}:)] Not really slamming Micromark, but their prices are usually at the high end of the range. OTOH, you can't beat their service, regardless of the stick you use. Wink [;)]

Ross, thank you. As always, your knowledge is very helpful. I did a quick check online and they've got some sonic cleaners that are probably a little better for what I need it for. Thanks again!!!

Ross, one more question. Do I have to worry about my Teflon packing washers in my airbrushes with the Simple Green and sonic cleaner (I just ordered an inexpensive model)?

As long as you don't leave them in too long. Teflon is pretty inert to most things, but you are adding a surprising amount of energy to the situation. If they get too hot (ultrasonic cleaning raises the temperature of the cleaning solution) there is a chance that they may be affected by the Simple Green—I don't know for certain. Just don't put them in and go away for a few hours!
