Decal Problems
Posted by Ant on Saturday, August 9, 2008 7:49 PM

i have had this problem a few times and it's driving me nuts. i use Mr Mark Softner with my decals. the solution seems to bead up when i apply it and then it will leave like a water mark on the decal. it doesn happen all the time but when it does it's a pain.

sometimes it actually looks like the decal has faded so i get away with it.Big Smile [:D] it doesnt happen with specific decals, at the moment im using Eaglecals, and not all the decals in a set.

am i doing something wrong? i have tried Micro-sol and had the same drama. while im on the subject i can never seem to get the smaller stencial's to stop silvering. i gloss coat the kit before applying, any hints?

I had the same problem with Mr.Marksofter so I switched to Pollyscale decaling solvent and haven't looked back. It's strong but it sheets on the decal, not beads.

Sometimes you can get the silvering out of a small decal by pricking a couple holes in it (I've even sliced across a dried decal) and re-apply your solvent.

To elaborate a little more on what maxpower said,

To get rid of "silvering" on your model is to let the decal dry completely, then re-apply the solvent making sure to cover the edges very well....you will see the "silvering" or air under the decal very well after it is wet again...then, carefully poke a few holes in the decal using a SHARP hobby knife. The solvent should bleed through the holes and you will see the "silvering" slowly disappear. You may have to repeat this a few times until the decal looks clear.

You may also have to cut the decal on seams, or other raised details to get it to lay completely flat, but if your using a good decal solvent (and decal), a small hole to let the air out will usually work.

Happy Modeling !
