Ericson Skycrane Retardant Tank Numbers decals
Posted by Sarge1 on Wednesday, October 8, 2008 4:08 PM

My current project of modifying Revelle's 172nd scale CH-54 Skycrane to replicate the Erickson Skycrane used in fire fighting has hit another snag, namely where to acquire the decals or how to reproduce/make the large numbers that are affixed to the retardant tank.  I'm using photos of the aircraft obtained from www.airliners.net as reference.  Basically, these are plain numbers but with white "shadow" outlines.  Any ideas suggestions as to decal sources or reproduction methods will be greatly appreciated.  It has taken about a year of working off and on to scratch build the retardant tank, and both the pond and ocean snorkels.  I'm on the down hill stretch but need the proper decals to complete the model.

Thanks in advance,

Carl

Hmmmmm ... white is always a problem, but may not be insurmountable in this case, if all you want to do is the numbers. Trying to do the Erickson Air-Crane lettering is going to require some custom printing by someone with an ALPs printer.

I think you can handle the large numbers with white and clear decal paper. Print out several sets of the numbers in black on the clear paper. Using a brand new No. 11 hobby blade, cut out one set so you have hollow numbers in the decal paper. Lay that over the sheet of white decal paper and lightly trace it over to get the duplicate white numbers. I will warn you in advance, though, that doing it this way will make it pure hell to get things to line up. BTDTGTTS. But it is cheaper than getting everything custom printed.

That's a weird font, too. I don't have anything offhand that looks like that ... kind of a NASCAR look to it.
