General Decal advice / Which chemicals ?
Posted by Milairjunkie on Thursday, April 16, 2009 8:05 AM

The last time I did any decaling was about 25 years ago when I was a kid - it sort of went like soak em & stick em, end of story.

Anyway, I am now working towards a slightly better standard (I hope) & need some advice of the various decal chemicals which are available. I am using Tamiya matt acrylic, will be covering in Future for decals & then plan to matt cover with a Future / Tamiya flat base mix.

I belive the norm is to use a chemical to apply the decal & then another to seal the decal?

Could you recommend which chemicals I should be using? I dont want anything to aggressive as I am all pretty new to this - I also live in the UK, where not all US products are available.

Thanks.

If you have access to the Micro Scale/Superscale product line, they make good Decal Set and Decal Solvent. I have been getting great results from those for many many years. Testors Model Master line has those produts as well, but I have not used their product.

If you can not find specialised products then try regular white (clear) vinegar. It's a cheap and readily availble alternative.

I used the Testers Decal Set and it worked well for me, no problems over Tamiya acrylics or future. I use Micro-Set from Microscale now and find it works a bit better and doesnt take as much and the price of the Micro-set is better too.
