Vinegar question
Posted by SkullGundam on Saturday, September 26, 2009 5:48 PM
So I put my first decals on a plane model a couple of weeks ago.  It went ok but you can sorta tell, especially where it goes over panel lines.  So I hopped on here and I've read alot of people say they use vinegar as a setting solution.  Can someone give me a quick rundown of how to do it?  I want my next plane to turn out better.

I learned of this trick from some old guys in a hobby shop years ago. I had an old Revell Ki. 84 and the decals just would not lay down. I had used the Micro/Superscale system and a few other solvents and nothing. One of the elders told me to go buy some White Vinegar and it would work. I could not believe that but went and tried it. It did work!

So I used White Vinegar and just brushed it on top of the decal and left it alone until it was dry. I think I used several applications. I don't recal any spotting and if there was it came up with a damp paper towel.

Good Luck!

So you still use water to get it off the paper at first?

Yes...  you apply the decal the same way you otherwise would, when you get it on initially and it dries and sets, you apply the vinegar to it, make sure not to touch it once the vinegar is on...  you may be tempted to as it may look like it is shriveling up- this is ok, as it dries it will settle into the nooks-and-crannies and look much better!  Tough decals may take more than one application, just make sutre it is dry before applying again!
