Making white decals
Posted by WNGSHSVOL6 on Thursday, February 11, 2010 1:05 PM

I've got the paper/film (Testor & Micro-Mark), the fixative spray and the artwork (white bumper/unit numbers for US armor).  Can't find white ink for a printer.....  Any ideas ?????  WNGSHSVOL6

You need to use a sheet of white decal paper. Printers assume you are printing on white paper so the color white is not used.  Good luck!

Or find someone with an ALPS printer, they print white.

White and metallics are not a typical colors used in home and office printers. ALPS printers are the only non industrial printers that I know of that have the capacity to print white.

You must set up your artwork to print everything but white, leaving the white area transparent so the white decal paper can show where the white is. This presents a problem when the color is a blend of white and another primary color.

You're better off finding someone who does print with an ALPS or can produce one shot print of one sheet at a time. Most who produce decals don't produce them on site. They ship them out to a printer such as Cartograf, Microscale etc and are required to have a minimum run of 200 sheets to make it worthwhile.  Draw Decal is about the only one I know of who can do single sheet production. Drop Greg an email, btw he's a great guy to work with.

I gave up trying to print out numbers on white decal paper.  I could not get the cut out lines fine enough, and I couldn't cut them out cleanly anyway.

I finally found dry transfer markings that did the job perfect:

Got them from Archers: http://www.archertransfers.com/archer.html

What you do is get some white inkjet decal paper and make your numbers white and draw a block around it and color it the color of the model.  When you print it out the white won't print and the block around the numbers and letters will fill in.  You will end up with a square with the numbers/ letters in it.   Then cut out the block and place it where needed.
