My scanner is down, so no pics or profiles can be scanned form the Osprey book, but I will try to describe the ones shown there as best I can.
A new P-40E named "squirt" is shown in Hawaii, January 1942, flown by 1lt James Beckwith, CO 72nd fighter Squadron, 15th Fighter Group. It is both in a good photo and profile. OD over Neautrla Gray with six position US stars and red/white rudder stripes typical of early 1942 PTO. No plane in group or serial numbers applied. A thin white vertical stripe on the tail running from just below the radio aerial attachment point to the panel line just above the horizontal stabilizers. OD spinner. The name "Squirt", including the quotation marks on the left side of the chin scoop angled low front to raised rear, roughly equal with the level of the wing root. Lettering style is handwritten script rather than print/block letters. US ARMY on lower surfaces as standard for the time.
Next profile is a P-40E "Kibosh", flown by Capt Ed Dyess, CO of 21st Pursuit Sqdn, 24th Pursuit Group. Bataan field PI, March 1942. Four position national insignia 2 fuselage, 1 upper left and 1 lower right wings, along with US ARMY on lowers. 17 in black centered on vertical stabilizer forward of rudder. and also in black on nose forward and just below exhaust stacks. Kibosh in arc in white capital letters below exhaust stacks on left side of nose at wing root level. Entire aircraft has multiple blue patches over bullet holes/battle damage repairs. No photos in book to support profile, based of recollections of ground crew.
There are two photos of 20th PS P-40Bs. One shows a yellow nose number 53 below the exhaust stacks, and the second one shows no visible ID marks other than US stars. No tail codes, plane in group number, etc. There is one other photo showing 2 P-40Es on Bataan with a bunch of mechanics from the 24th PG gathered in front for a group photo. Due to the mechanics, nothing much can be seen of either aircraft aside from OD spinners with black faced propeller blades having yellow tips. The side cowlings are removed exposing the engines, so no markings are visible.
I hope this helps.
