1/48 Decals for P-40Es at Pearl Harbor or Philipinne Islands Sept 1941-Feb '42
Posted by mic53mlb on Tuesday, June 29, 2010 2:03 PM

I'm trying to find decals and information for P-40Es at Pearl Harbor Dec '41-Feb. '42 (yes there were E models that were received before the end of December '41 as replacements) or Philipinnes Islands Iba, Nichols, Clark or any other fields from Sept. '41 - Dec. '41 in 1/48 scale, can anyone help me ?? The Philipinnes Islands were one of the first outside of the U.S. to have full compliments of the new P-40E models. I know that info on aircraft markings is sparce for the December period being that the islands were being invaded leading to our retreat but the 3rd, 17th, and 21st Pursuit Squadrons did have full compliments of P-40Es before Pearl was attacked and any info on these planes would be appreciated. Thank you.

I have the Osprey book P-40 aces of the PTO. It has some marking info for that area/time period, but like you said, it's not too much. What specifically are you looking for? Most likely for decals you will have to come up with stuff to make your own.

Any information or pics or both on the period I'm looking for would be a help. I have placement of the insignias as that was pretty standard on all P-40s at the time but unit, serial, and personal markings I really need. If you have any pics or drawings that would be a help. Thanks

Check Joe Baugher's website for the serials of the P-40's sent to the PI (joebaugher.com).  Look in the Fiscal Year 1940 listing, starting with the numbers of 40-0462/0483.  The 3rd and the 17th PS received their aircraft on the 29th of Sept. and the 21st got theirs on the 25th of Nov. through the 7th of Dec.  Check out this link for a copy of the official AAF history of the campaign from june, 1945:  http://www.afhra.af.mil/shared/media/document/AFD-090602-078.pdf

If the link doesn't work, wiki for far east air force and get it from the references.  Alot of the planes never got any serial numbers as that wasn't done until sometime in 1942.  The 21st birds wouldn't have any plane in squadron numbers as they were very new.  I only found one photo of a P-40 in the PI in the Google Life magazine images.  It showed OD B/C's with just plane in squadron numbers, so no help there.

I bookmarked Joe Baugher's website awhile ago and I know about the delivery dates and seriel numbers of the P-40Es arriving in PI, thanks. I've tried all over the internet but I can only get P-40B/Cs there or other aircraft (B-18, B-17, P35A, etc.). I've applied to P-40 Warwawk.com to be a member and get access to their info and pictures but that's been two weeks now waiting to hear from them. I'm going to pick up a few books on that campaign and see if there's somehitng in there. I tried your link to the official AAF history but it's not coming up. Let me know, thanks.

My scanner is down, so no pics or profiles can be scanned form the Osprey book, but I will try to describe the ones shown there as best I can.

A new P-40E named "squirt" is shown in Hawaii, January 1942, flown by 1lt James Beckwith, CO 72nd fighter Squadron, 15th Fighter Group. It is both in a good photo and profile. OD over Neautrla Gray with six position US stars and red/white rudder stripes typical of early 1942 PTO. No plane in group or serial numbers applied. A thin white vertical stripe on the tail running from just below the radio aerial attachment point to the panel line just above the horizontal stabilizers. OD spinner. The name "Squirt", including the quotation marks on the  left side of the chin scoop angled low front to raised rear, roughly equal with the level of the wing root. Lettering style is handwritten script rather than print/block letters. US ARMY on lower surfaces as standard for the time.

Next profile is a P-40E "Kibosh", flown by Capt Ed Dyess, CO of 21st Pursuit Sqdn,  24th Pursuit Group.  Bataan field PI, March 1942. Four position national insignia 2 fuselage, 1 upper left and 1 lower right wings, along with US ARMY on lowers. 17 in black centered on vertical stabilizer forward of rudder. and also in black on nose forward and just below exhaust stacks. Kibosh in arc in white capital letters below exhaust stacks on left side of nose at wing root level. Entire aircraft has multiple blue patches over bullet holes/battle damage repairs. No photos in book to support profile, based of recollections of ground crew.

There are two photos of 20th PS P-40Bs. One shows a yellow nose number 53 below the exhaust stacks, and the second one shows no visible ID marks other than US stars. No tail codes, plane in group number, etc. There is one other photo showing 2 P-40Es on Bataan with a bunch of mechanics from the 24th PG gathered in front for a group photo. Due to the mechanics, nothing much can be seen of either aircraft aside from OD spinners with black faced propeller blades having yellow tips. The side cowlings are removed exposing the engines, so no markings are visible.

I hope this helps.

Thanks, I have the "Squirt" profile in my Squadron P-40 In Action but the "Kibosh" was Capt. Ed Dyess' plane in the PI just before the surrender, I'd really like to get pics or a profile of that.

According to the Osprey book, no photos exist of this aircraft. Here is a link to an online profile, but showing a white spinner. Compared to the few photos available of other P-40s in the PI, most likely this was not the case and Kisbosh instead had an OD spinner as shown in the Osprey book profile. In all other respects the two profile jive well.
