atlrus That makes perfect sense, thanks a lot. If I use clear from a bottle instead should I work with it like a regular paint and thin it? Also, what brand clear would you recommend to use?

I use only Testor's Glosscoat and Dullcoat rattle-cans.. Never had a problem with either one in 40 years...
Sorry if this is dumb, but do you thin it?
I just use Tamiya acrylic clear gloss and Gunze acrylic clear flat. Never had a problem with those going over decals.
Many years ago I used Testors dullcote spray (too heavily) on a model with invasion/ID stripe decals. The decals actually split along the black/white demarcation lines and each segment curled laterally (along the length of the stripes) and rolled up.
If you used a Tamiya spray can, it is most likely that you applied the clear coat too heavily ove the decals. Tamiya spray cans contain a fairly "hot" lacquer and when applied too heavily, can attack decals and underlying paint.
It's best to use very light "mist" coats and allow each coat to dry before applying more.
I am just getting into aircrafts and a lot of builders say they spray clear over the decals. so I tried this today using Tamiya clear from spray bottle. The problem is - all my decals shrunk!?! What could be the problem?
