Posted by humper491 on Wednesday, November 23, 2011 4:29 PM

using a yellow wings decal sheet, when apllying them i completely botched it up!!! expecting this, i did purchase two sets. the plane has a metallizer aluminum finsh, overcoated with testor glosscoat. my question is how to remove the decals so i can start over?

I was going to suggest sticking some masking tape to the decal and pulling them up, but Metallizer paints are retardedly sensitive. Tape will also pull up the paint.....DO NOT USE TAPE!!!!!

I would try cutting the decals along the panel line (just to give some opennings) and soak with water to start with. If the water doesn't work, try some micro-sol, which should soften them up enough that you'll be able to wipe em off. (just a thought, I haven't had to remove decals....yet!!!)

Is there a clearcoat over the decals?

I agree with Fermis about how fragile the Metalizers are but if you sealed the paint before you decaled you may be able to use the tape trick. If you didn`t, you`re screwed. Like Fermis said, soakig them may be the only way to get `em off and that`s as long as you didn`t seal them. I use MM Metalizers all the time because I love the finish you can get with them. I also think they`re easy to repair, especially the buffing type. Spray a little more over your goof and buff it out, usually fills it right in and the blemish disappears...at least that`s my experience with them so far. Let us know how you make out.

Good luck,

Len

If it hasn't been over-coated, you could try simply placing a wet tissue over the decal for 10 mins and see if it lifts off.

thanks, it's my first try with the metallizer. the paint worked out great with the buffing, shiny! disapointed with my lack of decal skills, like i said, ordered two sheets so hopefully i can do it right the 2nd time.

thanks for the advice

i combined all the methods....drched tissue with microso, took up whjat clung to the tissue, then 'as a last cuase scenario, refuted the highlite term, and used the tape.....

not so bad, got everything of(metallizer also of cours) but i used silver as primer, so i might be good!

thinking if i tape off the yellow and blue, and some very nild sanding on the silver/metallizer.  would it then be somewhat salvagable?  do a little sailing with our 'captain and his sailor', and let me know what ya think.

if its beond my capabilitis(wrote it off the other day, but just had to mess with it tonight) . i'll send it to you(with the pe not for me ) and maybe you could ue it for soething. but i think ill boxe it uo on top shelf, to mess with in sitsuatiuns like now, and call it verry expensive practice :))

hope ya enjoyed that bird!!!! how many lbs was she, holy canollie!!!

Like I said earlier, wherever the metalizer pulled up, sand very lightly with 12,000 grit and spray more metalizer over it, buff and smile. Just make sure to seal the metalizer after the fix with either their metalizer sealer or Future...both worked well for me in the past in preventing the metalizers from pulling up.

Sometimes it`s more helpful to post pics of the problem you`re having, makes it easier to asses what`s going on....just sayin`.

Another tip for you- I have found that metallizer buffs up much better if you apply it to bare plastic, rather than over primer.  Maybe just my imagination, but it seems to work that way, in my experience.

I think you`re right Chuck. No where in the MM Metalizer instructions does it say you need to prime at all. You will get different tones if you do though...still experimenting with them. I was priming with gloss black, like you would with alclad, until I read the instructions and stopped. Right over bare plastic, you tend to keep the shade that`s in the bottle. At least that`s what I found anyway....Big Smile
