Painting is probably the smartest option. Nothing represents paint better than...... paint. I avoid decals wherever possible. For difficult shapes to mask, decals are great. But easy stuff like fuselage bands or swastikas for example? Paint is the best.

Wow!  Really?!  Any chance they were RLM colors?

That's Plan B. 

Why not simply mask and paint the band on the fuselage? Probably easier than applying a decal to that complex surface. Apply a base of flat white, then the color(s).
