Revell ''McHale's Navy PT 73'' decals
Posted by Drew Cook on Wednesday, February 15, 2012 8:44 PM

Since an original Revell 1/72nd scale kit of the "McHale's Navy PT 73 '' Vosper PT boat is so rare it now brings astronomical collector's prices, can anyone point me to someone who could provide a reproduction of the kit's shaded naval number decals?

I need the two large "PT 73" markings for either side of the bow and three tiny ''73s'' for the face and sides of the cockpit coaming, sized as they were in the original kit.

Ummm Vosper?

The USN had PT's built by Higgins & Elco.  The Brits used Vosper.  Was the TV show using a Brit boat?  I know most of the US boats were simply burned on site.

BTW, there is a fully restored 88 footer in Portland Oregon.

Reid,

As I understand it, the "McHale's Navy" TV show's "PT 73" was one of several British-designed Vosper MTBs that were built under license in the U.S. for export to Russia.  The war ended before the boats could be sent to the USSR.

Howard Hughes bought the boat that would eventually become the "PT 73" as surplus, and used it to film the one and only takeoff and short flight of his massive wooden seaplane nicknamed the "Spruce Goose."  Reportedly, it was the only boat big and fast enough to carry a film crew and keep pace with the "Spruce Goose" as she took off and flew.

I knew it was a 72 footer Vosper but didn't know about HH owning the 73. Very interesting!

Drew,

I too have been looking for those decals.  I will let you know if I ever find them.  Please do the same.
