Don, thanks for this tip! I was able to save a sheet of old decals that were splintering away when I tried to apply them. I sprayed a light coat of Testor's Glosscoat on them, let it dry, and they worked like new! (And it was the new formula stuff, with the white label.)
I'm an old timer too, but never heard of this trick. Thanks again!
