Help! Torn decals
Posted by Chappy on Monday, July 8, 2013 8:06 PM

Ughhhh..... while doing some touch up canopy work I masked up the Spit... before sealing the decals with a coat of Future. Needless to say, it's a bit of a mess right now.

What's the best way to salvage the build and get the torn decals off? Do I just need to sand down to bare plastic and start over with paint/new set of decals?

Really bummed about this because it was my first camo job and it was looking good.

Thanks!

New decals are obviously a must here, but you can likely remove the damaged ones with tape. Just burnish it down to remove all traces, then apply new decals as needed. No need to sand down to the bare plastic, repaint, regloss, etc...

Any tips for removing the stubborn 10% of old decals that don't seem to come off with tape?

Sometimes water will loosen them back up, or some decal solvent will soften them back up to where you can pull it off.

Warm water and decal set or solvent should losen them up enough to do the trick.

Decal set (not solvent) will loosen the damaged ones and after letting it soak for awhile, I scape off the stubborn bits with my thumbnail or anything else that will not damage the paint.
