While that's true but looking at paintings of Charley Fox's a/c, I couldn't tell if there were dark trim around the numbers and roundels.

Since this particular build is for the Longest Day GB, here is some info regarding the invasion stripes.

Squadrons were asked to apply these as late as possible just before D-Day, to protect the effectiveness of their use.   All stripes were to be 18" wide, 6" inboard of wing markings, and for the fuselage the rearmost white band had to be 18" away from the tailplane.

The application of stripes did pose a problem with existing markings, but it was only specifically stated that the roundels must not be covered up.  For 412 Squadron, it looks that their aircraft had the stripes painted just short of the codes and roudels, giving the illusion of dark outlines around those markings.

Probably a good way to replicate  the hand painted look of the stripes is to apply liquid mask over markings, paint on the stripes, and then remove the masks.

btw, great choice and tribute to Charley Fox

regards,

Jack

BlackSheep - Your first and last items linked would be correct.

The black serial codes would be 8 inches tall, and for spacing between digits about one inch - or roughly the width of the brushstroke on serials.

Fuselage codes for Spitfires can vary in height, roughly 18-24 inches.  Brush stroke is 6 inches, which should also be the spacing between lettering.  Their colour is Sky(type S), it has a green/grey hue to it, and should be the same colour as the the spinner and the fuselage band that is wrapped around at the rear of the aircraft.

Jack

I need your expertise regarding Spitfire call sign/code lettering found on fuselage of Spitfires during WW 2. I am in the planning stages of recreating a Spitfire flown by Charley Fox (VZ - F). I know for a fact there is no decal set for his particular aircraft but I figured I can at least buy lettering decals to replicate the call sign on the aircraft as well as the black serial number decals.

With so many different code lettering styles and colors from different companies out there, I have no idea which style and coloring is closely matched and accurate as used during WW 2 on the Spitfire. I've found some that are white, sky, sea gray, and medium gray.

The black lettering for the serial numbers isn't too hard to find but I do question myself whether to get them or not.

Are these accurate for use as serial numbers? I need to create MK916.

Which of these is more accurate to use for call sign lettering on a Spitfire?

I'm guessing this would be more accurate?
