Gloss & Flat Coats for Decaling

Thanks again, Don, Gary, Chris.  I have both lacquer thinner and mineral spirits, so I'll see how they work with both.

I just went by what the bottles said. Both the gloss and the flat in the bottles that I bought are labeled "Gloss Lacquer" and "Flat Lacquer". I just assumed lacquer thinner would be the way to go. My .02.

While it's been twenty years since I bought either one, the Testors DullCote and GlossCote that I used were both lacquer products; one whiff with the cap off would confirm that and both were thinned with paint-store lacquer thinner with nary a problem in that respect.  ymmv.

Have not tried lacquer thinner. I thinned mine with mineral spirits. I think Testors might possibly make two versions of the bottle stuff- one a lacquer and one more like an enamel.

Do both the gloss and dullcote thin well with lacquer thinner?

For the longest time, I used Testors Dullcote in the rattle can. Recently though, I bought a bottle of it and tried airbrushing it, with a little lacquer thinner to cut it. I've found this works much  better and is much more controllable. The lacquer means it dries quickly too.

I am another enamel user.  I use Testors glosscoat. If I am clearcoating the whole model (lots of decals) I just use the rattle can. If just a few decal areas I apply it from bottle, either by airbrushing or hand brushing.  I have also used polyurethane varnish, thinned quite a bit.
