Gloss Clear Coat - Paint Compatibility
Posted by David_K on Sunday, September 1, 2013 3:28 PM

Hi guys-

So I already posted a similar question on the Autos section, but was kindly re-directed to the Tools/Techniques/Reference area...and since my question has to do with both painting AND decaling, I hope I can find some help here?  (I have spent some time browsing through various threads, but didn't really find all the info I would like)

Anyway, I'm curious to know about compatibility between paints, clearcoats, and decals.  I know there are different formulations of paint and clearcoat, and I want to be sure I don't use something that will cause trouble for me.

I'm building the new Tamiya Red Bull RB6 Formula 1 car kit.  I'm using Tamiya Spray for some of the body work, and Tamiya Acrylic and Testors Model Master Acrylic bottled paint for some masked-off areas of the body work, as well as Tamiya Acrylic and MM acrylic for other parts. Then, I plan to clear coat the body parts, apply decals, and then clear coat the body parts again to seal them before final assembly.

The question is:  Is there any concern of the Tamiya Spray can paint causing problems with the acrylic bottled paint, either the Tamiya or the MM?  Can I use all those different paints, and still clear coat, decal, and clear coat again without any trouble?  I was thinking of using Future, but now I might go with Tamiya clear gloss spray...if I can find out whether it will eat any of my paint or decals.

Also, after two coats of paint, and two coats of clear coat, should I expect any trouble with body parts fitting together, with so much (thickness) of material sprayed on?

Thanks, I hope I'm posting in the right section!

Dave

The safest bet is always to try a test on a piece of scrap material.

However, in general acrylic spray can stuff is compatible with acrylic bottle stuff.  There are folks who even use enamels over acrylics by letting the latter dry for an extended period.  The big problem is lacquer over acrylics.

One problem these days is that there are now acrylic lacquers and acrylic enamels!  This brings up the situation of conventional laquers over acrylic lacquers!  Wow.

Thanks, Don!

I guess I'll do some test work...I've heard of Tamiya clear gloss spray eating decals, and I guess that's my biggest concern...I think I may just go with Future for my gloss coat, I'll feel safer that way (still going to test it, though!)

David,

from what I read, you're going entirely acrylic.  If your base layers are cured (usually even dry will work, but cured is better) for 2 days (4 days if you really want to be sure), the top coats should have no effect on the under layers.  As Don says, test it.  I don't think you'll find a problem, but better to be certain.

I know there's a lot of discussion on Future and the new formula, how it doesn't cure as well as it did, try it out and see if you're happy with it.  I know I prefer acrylic sprays from a spray can, I have a hard time getting a good, smooth gloss layer from an airbrush for some reason, but that's me.

Personally, I use Krylon glosses from a spray can (Michael's, a hardware store), they're cheap, they're acrylic, they're non-yellowing and I've never had them hurt anything I've painted or any decals.

That's my two pennies, for what it's worth.

Thanks for the info!

I'm still surprised that Tamiya's TS colors are acrylic...I've never used them, and I didn't realize that there were acrylics cans on the market, just always assumed they were petroleum based.

When I get to spraying (maybe this weekend), I'll be sure and use a scrap piece to test all my combinations of paint/decal/gloss with, and see if anything bad happens.

I'll look into the krylon acrylic gloss, too...probably cheaper than Tamiya...

Dave

P.S.- I guess I might start a WIP on the Autos section...

BTW, is this the krylon product you mentioned?

I absolutely love Future for clear coating and as a decal prep and set. However, my primary paints used are enamels. I generally use acrylics as a wash. I have never had a problem with Future used over the enamels but occasionally have had my acrylic washes get diluted by it as Future is an acrylic. So, in your case, bieng that your main paint is acrylic, make damn sure that your paint job is FULLY cured before touching it with Future.

Oh, and FYI, stay far away from Valspar clearcoat on models. Just a little lesson I learned the HARD way! My poor Stuka . . . . .  . .

Tamiya TS spray paints are lacquers.

Thanks Nathan, I didn't realize that.  Yes, David, that's the stuff I use.

I got my TS basecoats sprayed on the body parts last night...man, that Tamiya Spray is awesome!  Comes out so fine and even...According to Tamiya, their Spray Paints are *synthetic Lacquer*, whatever that means....they sure look good!

I think that means acrylic lacquer.
