Overcoating after decaling.
Posted by Don Stauffer on Wednesday, January 28, 2015 9:33 AM

Someone sent me a question through the FSM dialog thingy. I hate using that- do not find it user-friendly.  So I will answer here.

The question was, after using future or other gloss clear in spots under decals, do I use a general dull overcoat before applying washes or drybrushing?

The answer is yes, I overcoat with dullcoat, and the weathering goes over that.  How about the rest of you?  I know some folks glosscoat everything before decaling, others, like I, just glosscoat under decals.

I don't see what's the problem with decal application processes .Step #1- surface prep on the construction .Step #2- Primer and imperfection inspection .Step #3- paint the major coats of colors.Step#4-Any gloss coat application.Step#5-Application of all decals.Step#6-Application of the final sealing coat of Flat,Gloss,or Semi gloss.I do not use "Future" because it reacts to certain decal setting solutions badly.

I am with you, Don. I prefer washes on a flat coat, but I think most people do it on the gloss coat.

I prefer a happy medium. Gunze Semi-gloss to seal the decals then washes. Too flat and some of my washes dig in and won't wipe off, no matter what. Too glossy and they have trouble staying in shallower panel lines and kits with shallow/less defined detail. I do spray a gloss coat before decals though, on the whole model.

Hi Don, that was me. I wasn't sure how to contact you without hijacking the current thread. Thanks for the reply. I think I'm going to just do future under the decals, flatcoat then weather.

Thanks!
