I'm using acrylics, on a base of rustoleum primer. I had some problems early on with paint peeling from the mask, but after following advice given here things are adhering very well. Tamiya tape, de-tacked (is that a word?), and an airbrush. I also use Testors decal set and model master decal solvent.
I think I'll try painting it, and I will try a coat of Future to seal the tape edge.
I've run into decals that seem impossible to fit on other kits, a Tamiya Skyray comes to mind. When you run into that, do you usually cut the larger decal into smaller pieces? The Skyray kit has a great set of decals but they are thick and do not seem to conform to the surface, specifically around the intakes and tanks. But based on the kit reviews and pictures on the net, people do get them to work.
Most will spray the lighter color over all first, then mask with small squares of tape and shoot the other color. Burnish the tape down wth a toothpick and lay down a thin coat of clear, or the lighter color before the second color to help eliminate bleed through under any tape edges.
Would be nice to have the replacement decal sheet to use as a template for the tape squares, since some will have a taper to them.
UnwaryPaladin I thought of both approaches. Any tips on painting? Usually when I mask off small areas like that I end up making a bigger mess!

Really hard to help here without more info. What type/brand paints are you using? Do you have an airbrush or are you hand brushing everything? Did you paint the model silver and if so, what silver paint did you use? What masking tape or tapes do you have?
On the Bench: Too Much
Contact Revell for availibility of decal sheet, might take a couple of weeks to get it.
you could paint the nose yellow and carefully cut out the individual green checkers and apply them one at a time. I always paint my checkers personally, but if I had to use decals, that is the route I would choose.
Trying to finish up a Revell 1/48 P51D Mustang. The kit is offered in two configurations, Big Beautiful Doll and Miss Marilyn II. I chose the latter. Everything went well until I got to the nose decals. One is a yellow decal for the spinner, the other is a checkered design for the forward part of the cowel. Neither fit well at all and I wound up scraping them off after several attempts at getting them to fit smoothly.
I'm thinking about painting them on, but not sure how I'd do the checkering. Does Revell sell decal sheets? Maybe cutting them into smaller sizes will allow better fit. So close to finishing this bird, yet so far! Any ideas on this one?
