"Waterstains" around Decals?
Posted by Josh Ryder on Wednesday, December 26, 2018 10:20 PM

I'm getting, what I'll call water stains, around my decals which I would be happy to lose on my finished product. I prep all my models for decals with Future, soak the decal with water, treat with micro-sol and micro-set. However I get some staining around the decal that looks like it should evaporate but doesn't.

Anyone ever run into this and found a fix?

I’ve had some “stains” appear around decals on older models. Usually on kits where I used Micro Set/Sol and either no gloss coat, or on ones where I used Testors rattle can gloss and dull coats. The dull coat also has the added effect of yellowing with age as well.

Josh, since you mentioned using Future as your under-coat, you should also be aware that Future--or any other acrylic finish, for that matter--can sometimes 'spot' or turn white-ish when setting solutions are applied over them.

The 'fix' is easy: first, use as little of the setting solution as possible...and blot away any excess; then, when dry, just brush a little more of the Future over the discoloration. It will usually disappear just like magic!

Good luck.

I've had what looks like water spots on some decals after using micro set and sol but I think I just used too much when that happened or the fact it was an older model and decals. I have decided to start trying to paint any markings large enough for me to paint on and limit decals to only smaller ones. Not doing it yet waiting on a circle cutter to arrive and I'm giving it a try. Good luck finding the issue.

I try to avoid using the more aggressive one, I think it’s the Sol.

you might also try distilled water if your tap water is too hard

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

When using decal solutions over a Future you MUST let it cure for at least  3 days to make sure no reaction occurs.

I use Solvaset which is VERY strong over Future and never had issues if the Future is cured.

Alclad makes Aquagloss which takes less time to cure.
