Tamiya Decals - insignia backing problem
Posted by Chris L on Thursday, July 4, 2019 5:24 PM

Hi everyone. Newbie here (as a grownup anyway). I am working on a Tamilya 1:48 P-51Dand am struggling with the kit decals. Supplied in the kit are silver/grey backing decals for the USAAF insignia. At first I was confused as to why these werte included but eventually figured out they were meant to supply an outline to the blue and white insignia. Do not ask me why they didn't just print this outline onto the main decal. Perhaps I am misunderstanding this?

Anyway, I applied the blank silver insignia along with the invasion stripes, etc. and when I later went to apply the blue and white insignia over the silver, I was horrified to find that the silver decal did not line up with the colored one, making it impossible to get even borders around the blue and white insignia. Could the silver decals have warped or gone askew somehow? I did liberally apply solvaset becuase I know that it would be a double thick decal and I wanted to preserve at least some panel lines.

This was disappointing because the kit was otherwise going pretty well and now this ia all I'll see when looking at it, but I guess we are all that way a little bit :)

I haven't built that kit, so this is a guess. Were the silver layers supplied for all of the nat. insignias, or just the two one each side of the fuselage?

Maybe the idea is to be able to paint the stripes around the tail complete, then go back and add the silver in the places where the nat. insignia is. In the real case it was already there and the stripes got added, usually.

So there might be some area of silver around the bottom half of the insignia. No idea if that matches your alignment issue.

EDIT- looked at some online images of the decal sheet. Three out of four come with silver, the fourth being the wing top one where there weren't stripes.

Modeling is an excuse to buy books.

Thanks for your reply. This was a bit of a screw-up for me but I am just learning. I'm attaching a pic. I ended up tearing the top wing insignia upon removing it, painted over the silver, and reapplying. FAR from perfect, but short of scrapping the whole thing, I forge on... This kit has taught me a lot, so it's all good. In the future, I will skip the silver layer or get aftermarket decals.

Airbrush, stencils, and paint are a God send over decals. Give it a try and you'll never look back. There are still the smaller decals or decals that may be hard to paint, like nose art but it really adds to the satisfaction you get when you wrap up a build and see how nice those painted on insignia look.

Thank you. Do you have any stencil manufacturers that you like better than others? Next up for me is the Tamiya 1/48 Spitfire Vb, so the RAF insignia is certainly a nice beginner stencil to try :) I will explore here and youtube for some tutorials... Thanks again for the tips.

I've never purchased them, I make my own with a cricut machine but plenty of folks on here can direct you to a place to purchase them. Good luck
