I have used Future forever in my decal application - usually very good results but have noticed some orange peel lately - probably my airbrushing challenges, but I've seen other posts about Future having this same issue. So - I purchased Alclad II Laquer Klear Kote - gloss and matte. I used the gloss to seal an initial Future layer - then applied the matte. I really like the flow and how it laid down - like a laquer versus my recent Future issues. Anyone in the Forum world with experience using Alclad II Laquer Klear Kote to 1) lay down the base coat for decals, 2) sealing the decals with the same Klear Kote and 3) applying the matt would be ideal - good, bad and the ugly experiences please! Also - thinner to clean - Mineral Spirits?? Thanks - Happy Holidays!
I used this process on this little Buffalo. Only issue I had (which could be enviromental) was ever spec of dust was sucked into the paint. I cleaned up with laquer thinner.
Thanks,
John
Never had any issues with Alclad, though i use the Aqua gloss to protect my paint and seal decals before weathering. I use the lacquer clears for the final touch. Don't have any problems putting one over the other. I use their own airbrush cleaner, not cheap but i don't use much.
I am a Norfolk man and i glory in being so

Me too. It's my preferred method. I gave up trying to airbrush "Future" a long time ago. But I think it's my own fault, I don't do too well airbrushing Alclad's water-based Aqua Gloss, either. Can't say I've had a bad experience with any of the Alclad solvent-based clears.
I just clean up with hardware store tin can lacquer thinner.
As much as I hate to admit it, if I need a nice super-glossy water-based coat for some reason (for a solvent-based wash, for example) I've been known to resort to a brushed on coat of Future. Big, wide, high quality brush seems to work best for me.
Since I normally use Flory washed (water-based, clay-pigmented product), the solvent-based Alclad Klears work like a treat.
The Alclad clear lacquers (Gloss, semi-matt and flat) have been my goto clears for a long time. I find that they spray beautifully, build up the required finish quickly, and dry fast to a very durable surface. Since I also use Flory washes everything is very compatible.

Tom did a better job describing exactly why I like the Alclad Kleer product line better than I did!
I use Future, Aqua Gloss and the Alclad clear and flat lacquers. Like Greg, I get the pebbly effect airbrushing Future but get super smooth results using a soft wide brush applying coats about 10 minutes apart. Aqua Gloss sprays nice as do Clear Kote and Flat. For cleanup I use LT from Home Depot for everything.
The good thing about AG is that is cures faster than Future which means you can use Solvaset or any decal solution 3-4 hours after application but when using Future you need to wait at least 2 days otherwise you get a cloudy haze over the decaled area from the decal solution reacting with uncured Future.
Too many models to build, not enough time in a lifetime!!
Looks like I need to get some AG.
