Decal solutions staining clear coat and paint
Posted by Rob Hart on Wednesday, February 23, 2022 9:47 PM

Micro Sol left stains on the paint and clear coat (visible just adjacent to some of the stencil decals. Tamiya X22 clear coat over Tamiya Acrylic paints. Fundecal and Caracal decals. Not just dried residue from the water/solution. This is actually in the paint and won't wipe away. Had to be sanded down to the primer coat.Any guesses as to why?

This is normal. You have to be careful to wipe away the extra micro sol with a cotton swab or paper towel so there is no left lying on the paint. Some paints are more resistant than others, but as you found out, Tamiya is not one of them.

MRP paints don't need a clear coat prior to decals going on since nearly all of them are semi-gloss with a smooth finish.  They are also unaffected by decal solvents...even Solvaset doesn't stain or damage them.  But, short of revamping your entire paint inventory, MRP makes clear lacquers in 4 different sheens that are also unaffected by decal solvents.

Every decal on this F-16B went directly onto MRP paint and they all were given 3 applications of MicroSol, followed by another couple of applications of Solvaset.  No staining, and I just let the little bit of excess evaporate on its own.
