So in 1:48 scale an 18" is about 3/8" and 0.375X72 will get me that font size in points? Then I need the Amarillo to be 27 points to be about right?
Looks like Word is giving me a choice of 26 or 28 points.
On Ed's bench, ???
Yes. The key (for me) is to produce them in the proper size font in the program rather than trying to reduce them.
In 1:48 those 18" fuselage letters would be 3/8" tall, 24"= 1/2" tall. Drop to 1/4" for an 18" 1:72
Multiply the decimal fraction (.375, .5 or .25) by 72 to get the font size in points.
Yeah, its the Amarillo. I'm not sure on the scale size but 18" is about what I need. Was thinking of making up a bunch of different size NJ ANG letters. I've made decals in the past with mixed results so I'm reaching out. I tried to make some small 1/72 scale US Coast Guard home base text but couldn't get them small enough due to the limited capability of the program I was using.
MJY65 I believe the "45 degree" he is referring to is the corner cut on USAF Amarillo, not actual slanted characters. I'm using Adobe In Design

Ahhh! Got it. I thought he was referring to the slanted lettering that some AF and ANG aircraft have on them.

Hello!
I do it in Corel. I can even draw it up for you, if you send me some scans and tell me what you want.
Good luck with your build and have a nice day

My Paint Shop Pro has a function fpr placing text on a pre-defined curve. However, for angled text i use a different method. In PSP the text function allows you to adjust the position of each character. That is, that chacter is selected until you type the next charactor.
This place says they have the USAF Amarillo font that also allows the 45 degree style.

Can't remember where I got my USAF Amarillo font from years ago though, and never tried seeing if it also had the 45 degree letters because my project at the time was all straight lettering. So, that's the font you need to look for, and with that, you'll need to look for a drawing or publishing program that uses vector-based drawing rather than raster. Raster-based will give you jagged lettering and graphics. I was using DraftSight for a while because it was free, but now they have a subscription fee that's just too costly for me to justify for the rare occasions I need something like that.
What program are you guys using to creat letters and numbers in scale? I have to make some NJ ANG decals and was going to use Word but its just not right. Bought some AeroMaster 45 Degree ID Numbers and Letters but there really isnt enough letters. It only gives you two sets of 24" and 18" letters. Gives you a ton of numbers but not enough letters.
