Super Scale International?
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, August 12, 2004 6:27 PM
I just bought 2 sets of Super Scale International decals for my 1/72 P-47. Has anyone used these before? Does anyone have any warnings or advice about these decals? Are there any reactions to Micro Set and Sol? Thanks

They have been around for many years. One of the first, if not the first, large scale supplier of Aftermarket decals. They are designed to work best with the Microscale setting solutions, so no problem there. Like any decal, they work best if applied to a gloss surface.

Superscale at one point had the largest set offerings I have ever seen . As RJK stated, they work great with the microscale setting solutions. I have never had a problem with superscale sheets.
3d modelling is an option a true mental excercise in frusrtation

Biggest problem with Super Scale are the placement guides. They give you a B&W sheet that kinda shows where the markings go, but they actually expect you to research the real aircraft you're modeling Shock [:O]. They haven't changed their scheme since day one, still come in the same sealed paper envelope. The LHS tells me that Super Scale decal sales have really fallen off because many of the new generation of modelers have become accustomed to the more elaborate color marking guides & sandwich bag packaging made popular by Aeromaster. But, they are still top quality decals.

RICK! Your memory fails you, buddy. When Superscale (originally known as Microscale) decals first came out, they were packaged in heat-sealed plastic bags...

Just bustin' chops 'fer fun... Wink [;)]

But you're right that they really haven't improved their product at all. Matter of fact, in my opinion, since the name change they've steadily declined in quality all way 'round.

They're also notorious not only for the poor instructions but for typos and misprints all over the place; including on the decals themselves. And their artwork... well... I won't go there...

As to performance, they're excellent transfers; I've never had a problem actually applying them. So, in that respect, I can recommend them.

My personal opinion on decals in general, though, is similar to the opinions of all the worst rivet counters in the world as regards dimension and shape of a given kit . I've given up being fussy in most areas of modeling except markings; I still gotta get that stuff as close to right as possible.

What I'm trying to says is this: So as long as you're satisfied with the way they look, use 'em.

For what it's worth, Microscale/Superscale is still my sentimental favorite because they're what I grew up on...

Steve, I admit I forgot the very early sheets in the heat sealed bags, but they have been using the paper envelope for what seems like decades. The original decals were sold under the Microscale Logo. I think Jerry Campbell of Squadron fame got involved when the name switched to Super Scale. Micro Scale went through some shaky times when the Founder/Owner passed away, but they seem to be surviving. Also, I agree that some of the art work on some of their sheets is less than totally accurate, but I think the same could be said for just about every manufacturer. My personal favorite decals are AeroMaster, but they have their share of mistakes as well.

I could be wrong but I believe Super Scale actually produces many of the other guys aftermarket decals, it's just the other guys have much better packaging, instructions, etc.
I think when the MicroScale brothers split, Super Scale got the military side and Micro Scale got the railroad side of the business and now both exist seperately but might share a plant?
