Decal residue
Posted by Seanthehack on Monday, December 6, 2004 5:45 PM
After applying decals, and letting them dry, I notice a residue. I do not know if it is coming from the decals or the decal set. I clear coat my models with Future floor wax before appling decals. I usually use Walthers solvaset for softening the decal. Has anyone seen this, and what is the best way to clean it off before applying the final clear coat?

The residue is the glue that holds the decal to the model. It's an integral part of the decal & activates when the decal is submered in water. When the glue is actvated, the decal can be slid off it's backing paper. You can minimize the residue by placing the decal closely to it's final position. the more you slide the decal around, the more residue. After everything is fully cured, you can remove the residue with a soft cloth dampened with luke warm water.

Rick - I just had a disaster and needed to remove a large decal. I have gotten it off pretty well with  little paint marks but still have lots of glue left to remove. Is there a solvent or will the lukewarm water and soft rag work? BTW, I applied them over 72hr. cured Future.

 Sigh [sigh]

Cheers, Jake

pathvet9,

heavy solvents are not a good idea, unless you want to take the chance of removing your new deacls AND paint too !

If the soft MOIST rag won't work, try using a little dish soap diluted with water. Let it set for a minute until you can wipe it off with a soft MOIST cloth.

Good luck,

Jerry

Jerry -  so to read you properly, if I wanted to start over again and take off all the bad old decals that I have screwed up, the best would be to sand down and repaint, re-Future?

Sigh [sigh]  Bummer!

Cheers, Jake

I had to go back and edit my original response.......sorry.

If you have sealed the decal with future, then the only way I know of to remove them would be to use a solvent to remove the future and decal...this will unfortunately remove some of your paint as well so you may have to repaint. future is a clear acrylic product and once it drys, it's not easy to remove

If there is no future, or other sealer on top of your decal, then use the solvent, such as Microscale Micro Sol, to remove the decal by all means !! It shouldn't harm the paint job at all.......or the future !!

If your only trying to remove the glue, or adhesive film around the decal, try using a soft, damp cloth with a small amount of MILD dish soap. Then apply a clear coat finish.....just make sure there is NO soap left on the model !!!!

I have yet to see a good, or easy way to remove Future that so many modelers seem to be using these days.......if ANYONE has a good way to do this without messing up your great paint job, PLEASE let us ALL know !

Sorry for the misunderstanding,

Jerry
