Decal Removal
Posted by Anonymous on Wednesday, June 4, 2003 8:11 AM
I am trying to rescue an old Monogram Mosquito I built about 20 years ago. I think I must have forgotten to put a clear-coat over the decals, as they are peeling badly. I have removed loose stuff by taking a piece of high tack tape and lifting off all that will be lifted.

Does anyone have any ideas how to to get the remaining decals off? If I can, I can resurrect this model.

Thanks in advance,

Jim F

You might try an old toothbrush and some dish washing detergent.

Jim,
Have you tried a decal softener like Gunze's Mr. Mark Softer? Maybe it might sodten the decals enough to gently scrape them off, or maybe soak the offending decal on warm water - it might loosen the decal adhesive.
I have to admit it's something I've never tried - good luck and send a post to tell us what technique worked best for you.

Sometimes an extended application of a strong decal setting solution can help. Rub with a dry cloth (gently, so as not to scrape the paint) after the solution has set for awhile. If all else fails, try to GENTLY sand them off with about 1000 grit sandpaper.

Good luck!
