Monogram decals

Generally, Monogram decals are not compatible with setting solutions of any kind. There are some exceptions to this such as the ProModeler series and the odd kit that uses Cartograph decals. If they are the regular lithographed, twenty dipped coats of varnish variety, then all you can do to get them to conform is to use a damp tissue to press them into the surface. You may have to slice them a bit with a sharp knife as well. Other than that, you can try using diluted white glue or Future under the decal. Hope this helps.

I've had great success using Model Master's Decal Set with Monogram decals(and I've built a lot of Monogram planes).

Some of the older Monogram decals from the eighties/90's were hit or miss. You could use solution on some while others would be a disaster.
If I remember correctly in an issue of the defunct Scale Modeler magazine. They gave you the secret if you could or could not. There are numbers on the back of the decal sheet. If a number started with ??? you could if it started with ??? you could not. Sorry I don't recall the code.


I have noticed lately that Revellogram use different decals. Some say they are silk screened while others do not. The He-111 even has Cartograph decals! Why the differences? I just bought the F-4 Blue Angels and I think are not silk screened. I hope they are usable!

I just decaled a Monogram 1/72 scale F104C and boy am I disapointed. The decal sheet said that they were not compatible with setting solutions so I didn't use any. I futured first as always then applied them. They were so thin that I broke several so I thought that they would conform on their own. I didn't know it until they had dried, some were okay but some clear ones had hazed and there was no conformity to panel lines. I wish I had tested setting solution on some extra decals. What do you suppose is the problem? What does the setting solution do to them? They were so thin I almost coated them with clear lacquer. I have only heard of people doing this, does this keep the setting solution from working, or would this help the non compatibility problem?

AM decals add alot of cost to a kit but imho they are worth the price. I have used many different manufacturers of AM decals and have never had a problem. Two Bobs, Super Scale and Cutting Edge are all high quality.

I've used Future to get decals to snug down and stick but there isn't a lot of working time until it is too sticky to move... on a big decal I would be nervous to try that...

best bet would be AM decals. $5.00 or so gives you peace of mind...

I'm not contradicting or anything, but with other decals, the decal set sux!

other decals as in AM or out of the box? I've really never had a problem with Microset or Microsol. One particular decal it shrivelled up like yesterdays banana but the others off the same sheet did fine....
