Yellow & Black "DANGER" Stripes
Posted by TomZ2 on Tuesday, June 17, 2003 10:17 AM
Does anyone know of someone marketing either decals or some kind of shrink-to-fit material of yellow & black "danger" stripes in scale? (I'm looking for 1:72 scale specifically. ) The only source I've found wanted too much for decals that were too tiny to use.

It comes down to this: painting yellow & black (at all, let alone as stripes) is extremely difficult; the old workaround of using chart tape fails when one is dealing with an irregular surface; and making my own decals is an unattractive alternative. Yet such stripes are found marking off unsafe areas like railings, step edges, bumpers, vehicle parking spaces, loading zones, inlets, pipes carrying hazardous chemicals, and the like all over the real world. Any knowledge, hope, ideas?

For the black, try using one of the very fine point sharpies, I bought one at the store that has a regular sharpie tip on one side and the other has an ultrafine point, about .5 mm really. Prismacolor makes similar markers, in a variety of colors, but I don't know how well the yellow would cover paint. The black, of course, is great.

Also, consider printing your own decals, you can buy special paper for it, and if you have photoshop, there's no reason that you couldn't at least give it a shot.

HEY,
I'm no expert but im sure that there are companies that make these kind of decals. Try the ads at the begining and end of the FSM or Scale Auto. I've seen some companies that make custom decals. I dont know about price though. Sorry i couldnt be of more help.

Could you get some yellow stripe decals and draw black lines with permanent ink on them?

I may get so drunk, I have to crawl home. But dammit, I'll crawl like a Marine.

Try this.....
paint the area yellow. Then use black decal stripes or cut stripes from solid black decal sheet and apply over the yellow. Top coat when the decal stripes are dry.

After the top coat is dry, just mask and paint out any yellow and black slop-over.
PERFECT!

Re: printing my own decals. As I said

making my own decals is an unattractive alternative.

The reason it's "an unattractive alternative" is that painting a line (or area)
yellow (or white) and going over it with alternating clear & black (or red)
chart tape is easier. I've found that there's a fair selection of chart tapes
with either left or right hashmarks (or vertical). I was just looking for a
somewhat less fussy technique.

Ditto to decal makers. If you haven't dealt with these folks, you're in for
a shock. If you want something that isn't in their catalogs, they need
you to provide a JPG of your decal. When you think about it, that makes
sense, but if I wanted to go that route, I'd print the sheet myself and
cut out the middleman.

The only decal maker I found who already does danger stripes is Fighting
Pirannha Graphics. http://www.fightingpirannhagraphics.com/
Unfortunately the whole $4.55 sheet is a mere 2¼x3" and the individual
waterslide decals are a tiny 2x4mm and smaller. The small size is because
FPG decals are for Battletech Miniatures. In all fairness I must point out
that both right and left-hand stripes are provided and there are dozens
of them.
