Help please, decal went FUBAR while setting
Posted by MA Cooke on Saturday, August 6, 2005 7:05 AM
Hi everyone.

I was applying decals to my 1/48 F4U-4, and apparently I accidentally touched a decal by hand after it had been setting for a few minutes (I use the Micro Sol and Micro Set). The next day I was inspecting the model, and the "OLATHE" on the bottom wing is all FUBAR, the "E" is cocked and rotated down about 40 degrees.

Does anyone know if the decal can be partially lifted, put back into place, and will it snuggle back down the way it was?

Any and all help will be appreciated, thanks in advance.

Mitch

Once it is set up and snuggled down, nothing will lift it. The only thing you can do is remove it and apply another decal in its place.

Oh.

FUBAR: F Censored [censored] ed Up Beyond All Recognition. FUBAR is often used as a verb, such as "You sure FUBARed that one." or "Let's try not to FUBAR this one, guys." etc.

I don't have another decal. Censored [censored] Censored [censored]

How big is the letter "E" and is it in some strange font? Since it's a letter with no interior areas (like "P" or "B") you could draw it on some Frisket , cut it out, and then paint it. As long as you match the color a coat of gloss or flat would pretty much eliminate any visual differences.

If only the "E" is ruined you might want to CAREFULLY score the decal between the "H" and "E" so only the "E" gets pulled up (a piece of super-sticky masking tape will usually pull them up).

UPDATE:

I fiddled with it for almost an hour, part of the E lifted, the rest tore. I ended up just taking the whole Censored [censored] decal off. The "5" and "K" that go on the foremost main gear doors also went FUBAR on me, so this kit won't have all it's decals. Oh well.

Thanks for all your input.

I hate it when those things happen.

I once had some big decal problems with some propag team decal. They where so thin that they tore! Very frustrating.

Only display it one way. I messed up the tail marking on my 1/32 F-16 (I got the "MJ" just crocked enough to be noticed). Now I never display it with that side showing.
