applying decals on airliner, help
Posted by flaver on Thursday, August 18, 2005 10:25 AM
I did a search here but to no avail.

I built an airbus 330, the decals drove me nuts, the long ones for the windows.

Is it better just to mask and paint, or is there a secret I don't know of. The decals or long as you can imagine, they rip and never seem to be the right length when reaching the back of the plane.

It came with some extra length for scabing in which I used, but they never seem to work properly.

Any suggestions ?

Thanks

All I can suggest is maybe cut the decals to managable lengths, and put them together on the plane You'd have to use micro sol and micro set, but i think it'd work!

There are a couple of ways you could do this. I go to airliners.net, the difinitve source for airliner information. Do a photo search for the airline and aircraft your modeling and count the number of windows on the acutal aircraft. Then you can count the decal windows and put them on in segments as RadMax8 suggested. Another thing I do to make sure they line up proberly is I'll put the cocpit window decal on first then ailgn the windwos in relation to the front window. Again researching the actual aircraft is a must.

Another web site is airlinercafe.com. THey have a wealth of airliner modelers that can help you out.

I love airliners and have had lots of success with them.

I hope this helps.

When I did my BAE Concord, I kept the decal area wet until I was happy with the placement of the decal. After making sure the decal was loose from the backing, I placed the end of the decal on the nose, held it in place with my thumb, and slid the backing off slowly. Once it was positioned, I lightly padded it with a paper towel to absorb the excess water. Then I used micro set(?) to keep it in place.

For my Air Force one Model, I Masked off the areas where most of the decals were to go and spray painted it. Then for the white and gold striping, I use auto pen striping that I picked up from an auto parts store.
