Weird - Decal totally GONE.
Posted by mfsob on Wednesday, September 14, 2005 11:53 AM
My 1/700 Perry frigate appears to be violating a basic law of physics, that matter can neither be created nor destroyed. But this morning when I got the hull out to do some touch ups, part of the white flight deck decal was ... gone. Just gone. I could not find any flakes of decal in the box, or anywhere else I had the hull the night before. True, the kit is old (1996 date on the box) and the decals were correspondingly old, but what the heck happened?

And where am I going to get another flight deck decal? And why is this hunk of plastic turning into the model from hell? Question [?]

Did you sacrifice a good decal sheet to the decal gods before you started? Everyone must do that before they decal.

Make up the decal from white decal sheet. Make sure you have a good clean, gloss surface. Wash the model in with dishwashing soap to get any oils or contaminates off the surface. Use Future if needed to gloss the surface, put on decal. Use some diluted white glue or seal it with Future. Overcoat with a good flat, should be OK. Would recommend using a decal set on other decals to snuggle them down then over coat with flat again. I have had this trouble, seems the decal did not have enough glue to work or it did not seal down on the model, or surface was contaminated. You may have other areas that are just sitting on the model by will power and will flake off later. That is why I recommend using decal set (Champ works great, very agressive, but really snuggles them down and helps hold them).

How long should I let the decals dry before I spray them with Testors dull coat? 24 hours? I ended up snipping white lines off a decal sheet I got from Gold Medal Models for something else, it thankfully had the bullseye circle, but I do NOT want to do this again.

24 hours minimum. If you use Future, I wait at least 3-4 days to make sure it is fully curred before putting down the final finish. I have done it in 24 hrs, but you run the risk of fine cracks appearing or other wierd stuff happening later on, so I err on the side of caution and wait. Better to wait than have to do it over.

Also, if you are putting Future over enamels, definitely wait a week to be sure the paint has curred and the solvents are evaporated.

Well, I waited about 24 hours. I know, I know, impatience leads to disaster. But after putting two flat coats down over the flight deck decals, I was kind of like, Screw it, I want this to start looking like a ship! Fingers crossed that everything stays where it's supposed to.

speaking of waiting, I just put a coat of future ove some decals I applied yesterday. Most are OK but the wing walk decals wrinkled badly as the future dried. Did I not wait long enough, anyone else have wrinkle problems with Future?

I am starting to get a bad feeling that I didn't wait long enough for the decals to dry before I oversprayed with flat coat. I've noticed some tiny pinholes in some of the white helicopter landing area stripes and, at this stage of the model have no clue how to fix it. I think I've just going to have to mark this one off to experience.
