Should I just leave them be?
Posted by mfsob on Monday, October 3, 2005 8:35 PM
Finishing up my 1/700 scale Perry class frigate, I printed out a ship's crest and squadron badge with the Testor's decal kit and my shiny new HP printer, and was pleased with how they looked applied to the clear plastic base of the display box.

My question - Since the decals are going to be covered by the display box top, can I just leave them be? With the ship already mounted, I'm not sure I could put a coat of gloss clear from a rattle can over them without getting it on everything else. I'm just worried about them eventually peeling or something.

I would seal them. They will eventually peel/crack/come off in some way. Try tapins everything but the display box where the decal is and then spraying with glosscote.

Buy some Future Floor Wax and brush it on.

That way you avoid any problems with over spray.

I'm going to give the Future a try, but try to keep it on the decals. Or is that going to look funny when it dries? I've never used the stuff before.

You can just brush on the Future over the decals only. I've done the same with decals over bare metal foil - just brushed Future over the decals only - and they came out fine.

Well, I did a test on some extra decals from this same batch, and the ink ran!!! And yes, I coated the decals with the Testors decal cote and it had been dry for more than 24 hours when I tried this. So now I'm not sure WHAT I'm going to do, except maybe just put the lid on the case and hope for the best.

Anyone else had this problem with Testor's decals made from their kit? I used an HP inkjet printer and was happy with how the colors came out, and the resolution, but not with the Future experiment.
