Best I can tell there are three pronunciations for the word:

o D-cals (emphasis on "D")
o d-CALS (emphasis on "Cals")
o Deck-uls

For me it's always been D-cals.

Duckman,

I'm with Scott. I've only ever heard "D-cals." That doesn't mean that's the only right way to pronounce the word, or course.

Regards,

DECK-als is the "proper" English pronuciation, as us fellow Canucks understand it. DCals is Amuricun and is right up there with Eye-talian. No offense to my brothers in the US, eh? Big Smile [:D]Wink [;)]Tongue [:P]

PS and its MATTE, not matt! LOL!!

The Oxford English Dictionary (online version) gives the pronounciation as DeeKal

Having said that - I have always pronounced it Deck-al

Interesting. Dictionary.com gives both pronunciations. A quick query of the numerous ex-pat Brits and sole Kiwi co-workers all say deckal. This seems consistant with the rest of the Empire.

Guess it all comes down to different folks!
