Academy decals aren't that great. The most common problem is not getting them to stick or stay on. Use warm water with a few drops of Elmer's white glue and liquid dish soap. Make sure to apply decals over a gloss surface, but this gloss surface can be acrylic, enamel, or lacquer. Also make sure you soak the decals until you can move them from the paper backing. If they won't move, dip the decal back into the water for a little longer and try again.

You can contact Academy to get replacement decals. You can send them a letter, or you can go through their site, www.modelrectifier.com. You can also but aftermarket decals from any of the manufacturers available. www.greatmodels.com, www.squadron.com, www.aeromaster.com, and www.meteorprod.com are all great sites to buy from.

www.modelingmadness.com has a whole section of decal reivews which is helpful for seeing which ones you want to buy.

Academy decals

After starting back into the hobby about 18 months ago, I have built two Academy kits. An F-86 and a P-40. I have also had troubles with the decals on both kits.

On the F-86, had some trouble getting some of the decals to adhere but I think that problem was caused in part by the finish.

The P-40 decals are another problem. I could not get the decals to release from the backing paper and when they did most of them tore apart. The decals seemed to be very thin. I did not complete the decals as this P-40 was part of the AVG and I did not want to even attempt the shark mouth on the nose.

Has anyone else experienced this problem with Academy decals? Anyone know what I may be doing wrong? I am using just warm water to get the decals to release. And finally does anyone know where I can get some replacement decals? I destroyed a couple in my attempts.
