Crumbling carbon decals
Posted by Anonymous on Monday, March 13, 2006 5:09 AM

Hi,

I have picked up my old hobby again and after a few try-outs with some models I decided to put together the Williams F1 See through version by Tamiya. Provided with the box is a sheet of carbon decals and when I work to get them on the (unpainted) part they crumble. They really dry up fast and doesn't give me the time to place them properly.

Has anybody had the same experience and can somebody tell me what I am doing wrong here?

hi Dutchy.  I'm not sure what you mean by "carbon decals," and I apologise for asking the obvious, but could you try painting over the decals with liquid decal film?  Or overspray the sheet with clear paint (this is a little bit thicker than liquid decal film).  I've used Micro-Mark liquid decal film, and it works very well.  There are other brands too.  Good luck.  george

George,

Thanks for the suggestion. The sheet I mean is to give some parts of the car a carbon/kevlar look, but when I am working to place them on the necessary parts they don't stick and dry up making them crumble.

I haven't painted the parts as they are totally covered by the decals and can't get them in place on time. The decals are really thin (so they tear easily) and dry up in no-time.

I think I understand what you are talking about. This is what I do when my decals get dry before I get them set. After you remove the backing paper, just dip them in water again to keep them wet, and I keep a medium sized paint brush in the water to add more once I have the decal on the model. I hope this helps and good luck!
