ink lift on decals
Posted by nick31 on Tuesday, April 11, 2006 11:11 AM

Have just come upon this problem:

When decal applied, to roll out the water/air underneath, I gently roll a cotton bud across the decal. This has always worked with no problems, however with the latest sheet I printed, when I roll the bud across the decal some of the ink is lifting off onto the bud.

Decals are printed on a laser printer so the ink shouldnt be affected by water.

Tried giving a few decals a coat of Future to protect the ink but this didnt work. The ink still lifted off onto the bud.

Ive been printing my own decals for about a year now and never had this problem before. The paper Im using is from the same batch that worked before and has been stored properly.

Any ideas ?

Cheers,

Nick

Some laser printer "inks" are not as water resistant as others, and the formulation may have changed, too, from one cartridge to the next.

I'd suggest using either one of the coatings specifically made to go over home-printed decals, or artists' spray fixative.

It might be your decal paper (maybe a new manufacture), you could try to spray the decal with Clear Krylon paint to water proof them.

just had another thought....this is the first time Ive used a scalpel to cut out the decals.

Prior to this Ive used a small scissors. Could the problem be the way Im using the scalpel is in some way stretching or pulling the decal paper and in effect cracking the ink, which then lifts off on the bud ?

Will try again with the scissors tonight and see if theres any difference.

Thanks for the suggestions btw
