So it was going fine until......

I was finishing up my Hurricane IIc. I'd painted everything to my liking, and I added the decals, dipped 'em in water, placed them, used a Qtip to push out the air bubbles, etc. Everything looked good. Set it aside for a few days.

I then added a coat of future, and let that set for 2 days. I added some wash to the panel lines, and after that was complete and dry, I put down a layer of dull coat from a rattle can.

I went out to check on the progress of drying- and the decals were blistered up. I tried to smooth them down, but the dull coat was still slick, which seemed to make a worse mess.

Two questions-

Any ideas on what I did to cause it? I thought the Future would seal it up- maybe another coat should've been applied?

Any ideas on how to correct it?

i've had that happen with the rattle cans before,are you sure that you didn't put it on a little heavy?

i found that to be the cause for my blistering,now i kep a hair dryer with low heat on the ready and as soon as i spray the dull coat i wait about 30 seconds and then blow dry it,i haven't had that problem since.

also remember that depending on your geographic area the weather is warmer and the humidity is on the rise which can have an effect on how it dries and how long the laquer has to eveporate

I'm going to blame the rattle can as well. They can damage a two day old Future coat no problem. You may have to wait a week or longer for Future to "cure" all the way. Or you can add Tamiya Flat Base to Future and spray away. Check out Swanny's complete Future thread in the Techniques forum for hints on the proper ratios for satin and dull coats. And experiment! A little Flat Base goes a long way, and it's much harder to gloss up a flat than it is to flatten out a gloss!

Thanks y'all. I'll do some more reading and 'sperimenting. I may have sprayed it on a little thick, especially on the one wing where there was the most blistering.

I was pleasently surprised- I checked it this morning, and much of the blistering had settled down. It's still noticable, but it's gone from "throw it in the trash" to "just ook at it from a distance". :-)

Some FYI jwb, rattlecan coats will also wrinkle the paint job if too much is applied. I found the best way to avoid this is to use acryl clear coats as opposed to enamel/laquer coats.

I'll give that a shot too. I worried about the enamel coat. It smelled so strong I figured it had to be some powerful stuff.

I'm also a convert to acrylic clear coats... the Polly Scale (Floquil) and Aircraft colors clear flats are much flatter than the Testors dullcoat and they give a more uniform flatness as well! (plus they don't have a smell, unlike the Testors... Yuck [yuck]
