if you are buying from a store, ask if you can inspect the contents at the counter before you buy.  i know that my local hobby store has no problem with you looking at the contents of the kit, most of them aren't taped shut. if buying online, ask the seller what color the decal backing paper is, should be of some use i think

Got an e-mail from them yesterday - if I send in the unused portion, they'll send me a new sheet.  And yes, they are the "blue" ones, not the crappy "white" ones.  Yeah! My faith in Tamiya has been restored!

I still wish there was some way to check what you're getting in the box before you purchase it. . . .

Thanks for the offer Darson!  I still haven't heard anything back from them, but then it's only been a couple of days.  I realy enjoy their 1/48 scale WWII aircraft models, I hope they have the customer service to back it up.

Well you've just had me running off to check the stash to see what color decal paper I've got on my Tamiya kits and of the four I just quickly checked all are printed on blue paper.

My experience with Tamiya decals has always been pretty good, I know they get a bad rap for being a little thick but with a little Micro Sol & Micro Set they go down fine.

By the way if you don't have any luck with Tamiya getting replacement decals send me a Personal Message, I should have a few spare sets for the P-51B lying around.

Cheers

Difference in Tamiya Decals?

Recently I bought 2 of Tamiya's P-51B's for a project I had in mind.  When I went to apply the decals, I noticed that one set was printed on white paper, and said it was printed in the USA.  The other set was printed on blue paper and said printed in Japan.

The white (USA) set was crap!  The decals fell apart when you tried to apply them, broke apart on the paper before you could even get them on the model, etc.

The blue (Japanese) set worked great.  The decals came off the paper easily, went down smoothly, and bonded well with Micro-set and Sol.

Has anybody else noticed this?  How can you check which version of decals are in the box beore you purchase it?  I know I don't want to try and use Tamiya USA decals again!

I e-mailed Tamiya this morning requesting a replacement set - so far have not heard anything back from them. . . .
