Very uneven surfaces

On the panzer III and IV the Germans seemed to put unit markings and crosses over vision ports, hatches, and the most uneven surfaces they could find. Is there a better way to put these decals on other than lots of solvent or cutting the decal apart at where the hatch meets the hull?
