Future Again!!!!!
Posted by Ant on Tuesday, October 2, 2007 12:23 AM

i have read all i can find on using Future and i am still not sure that i am getting it right!

i have read Swanny's complete Future and it seems to be the best guide, however he states "one coat is enough". so is that one coat a mist coat or a thick coat? just how glossy does it have to be?

i have tried brush painting it and it leaves just a coat and not a lot of sheen, i have airbrushed it and find im putting a mist coat which dries to a low sheen and shows the texture of the paint through. so just what is right? i only really want to gloss coat for the decals, not to seal the finish.

1. does a mist coat do the job for decaling?

2. if not does the finish need to be glass smooth and shiney like a car paint finish?

I've never been able to spray it on in one coat. The mist coat never seems to be glossy enough. I glop on the second coat pretty thick to get the right surface for decals.

So long folks!

I have to agree with Bgrigg - I never seem to be happy with my coat of future but on the other hand it doesn't seem to matter, the results are very satisfactory.  Airbrushing it is the most frustrating, for the reasons you both have mentioned, so I tend to lightly brush future on.  On my latest kit, an Italeri Ju 88, I even opted to brush future only on the areas where the decals were going to be - obviously if you are decaling a modern jet with all the decals involved you may as well coat the whole kit!

So, my experience is a mist coat seems to work as well as a super shiny coat, I think the only criteria here is to level out the matte finish, even if it is only by a moderate amount.

All the best

mooseman, when you say a mist coat i take that as one light coat so you can just see it? and when you use it in this way, do you cover the whole model? and last have you had any drama with the decals silvering?

i have found with the smaller decals, stencials, if i apply a drop of future and then the decal it works fine. if all else fails i will go bacl to a gloss coat of lacqure, worked fine for years.!
