Roden decals
Posted by Anonymous on Thursday, November 6, 2003 2:17 PM
Despite having nice 1/72 WWI airplane kits, Roden decals seem to be crap. Is anyone else having trouble with them? Are they all bad? And if so, where can I get sheets of the late WWI german crosses??

Yeah I agree on their decals not always working, instead crumbling when you try to take the off the sheet. I bought some microscale liquid decal film to deal with it. You brush apply a coat over the decal, and it creates a new film to hold it together. Just make sure you trim very close to the edges when you cut it out or else you could have alot of extra clear film on the decal from the application of decal film

The word on another message board is that Roden is aware of the problems with their decals and they are working to get better decals for their kits.

Just a rumor, but if true, it's good news.

I found that some of their sheet were fine, while others were just terrible. To see how good the sheet is, you can test it out on a decal of a scheme you dont want to use, but make sure its fairly large. If the decal falls apart use the decal film, if not go without it, or if you get paranoid like me, always use the decal film on roden decals now Laugh [(-D]

Your opinion about decals in RODEN's kit is very actual - photo with seriously damaged decal from Felixstowe was'nt surprise for me personally.
I'm must explain something to You and all, who had a problems with our decals.
At first, when we bagan to made kits under RODEN lable in 2000, decals were printed for us by other company, which previously never made decals for modeller needs - You, probably also had some little troubles with decals in Albatros series, Strutter,etc.,- all they had poor adhesive ability. Since this year we started to print decals by our own powers and first was #014(Felixstowe),#023 (SE5a Hispano) and #407 (Comic Strutter). I'm must agree that first attempt was unsuccesful and many sheets (not all!) had failures, like on the photo.
But, our new decals - D.VII, Sopwith 1B1, Gotha Va/Vb is seriously improved and their mechanical properties is more than satisfied - I'm can said this with absolutely confidence because I'm just finished 1/48 D.VII and decals not been my problem (when I'm made D.VII in 1/72, struggle with decals was endless!). New decals confirmed with SuperScale's Micro Set and Micro Sol without any problem.
So, good luck and thanks for this important question!

So they really are working to get the decals looking good and working right.
