Beer bottle caps.
Posted by Higgy on Monday, October 13, 2008 10:12 PM

I'm sure this, or something to this effect has been posted before but......

I was cleaning up yesterday after having a few friends over saturday night and when I was putting away the beer empties I also had a few hand fulls of beer caps, just as I was about to pitch them in the garbage it dawned on me, rinse off the caps and put them in a ziplock bag. I now have 20 or 30 disposable cups for mixing small amounts of paint in, or for putting a few drops of glue/crystal clear in while building.

Yeah I save all my caps for that very reason. They are perfect for the uses noted above. Great tip.

Yep. I save the caps from bottled water. Same idea. I use it to mix paint or to thin a small amount of putty, then throw it away. Re-cycle, re-use,,,,,

Bottle caps are to small for me.  I use pringles lids for mixing pallets and for little water cups for my water slide decals (shallow enough to hold the decal without it going to the bottom of a drinking mug)

I've been using the caps for awhile for mixing small amounts of paint. I never thought about a pringles top for decaling. I'm always throwing them away. It amazing some of the things we use that are so handy for modeling.

Yup, they work great for mixing small amounts of paint for brush painting.  I always need to add some Tamiya thinner with the drying retarder to the paint to make them easier to brush with, the bottle caps really come in handy!

Scott, I feel like a real idiot now.  I always use the Tamiya thinner for the airbrush but it never even occoured to me to use it for hand brushing.  Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]Banged Head [banghead]  I bet it helps a lot.

I learned that lesson the hard way, just about giving up on brush painting Tamiya Acrylics altogether until I tried that trick.  The thinner makes it much more fluid and drastically slows down the drying time not only eliminating brush strokes and gumming of the paint, but giving you much more time to work with it.  Smile [:)]

The only thing i've ever used for decals are clay pigeons.  They give you enough water to soak a few at a time and they're definitely shallow enough.  Another use is that they're also pretty darn good for a place to mix paints.  And they're cheap.

I go to the bar down the street from my house, order up a crown and coke and ask them for all their bottle caps. Hundreds of em! I'll never use them all.

My buddy likes to superglue them to the tops of old discarded tables and then uses a clear acrylic compound he gets from TAP plastics to seal them in. Very cool looking. He does the same with spent shell casings.

Plastic poker chips are what I use as glue dispensers or for holding small amounts of paint. So far, I've had good luck finding the chips at yard sales.
