A Question About Tape....
Posted by Puma_Adder on Tuesday, November 18, 2008 11:34 PM
OK, I cant get to my LHS and I need tape to mask off areas when I am airbrushing. What kind should I use that I could get from a normal department store (base PX)?

Low tack masking tape. Not sure if they will ahve that particular type at any PX. You can try to order some Tamiya maksing tape online. That stuff is the best.

Look for 3M Blue painter's tape for delicate surfaces.   It has a yellow  cardboardcore.   The all-purpose blue tape from 3M has a white core.

Sign - Ditto [#ditto]'s on the blue tape.....I've had good luck with both types, but the yellow core seems best, for being low-tack it is very sticky. I realize that is an oxymoron....I mean that it adheres and comforms very well, holds very closely but leaves no residue.

Drafting tape if you can find it; it's thin, low tack, and meant to only stick once.

Also try to find "Frog Tape". It's green. I've never used Tamiya tape but I hear it's very similar (and a lot cheaper)

Here's a few things you can get from a typical dept. store:

  • Large and small post-it notes from the stationary dept.
  • Blue painters tape (hardware dept)
  • Blue-tack poster putty (stationary dept)
  • Silly Putty (toy dept)
  • 3M Nexcare Waterproof 1st Aid Tape  (Pharmacy Dept)

Ace hardware has purple, low-tack masking tape that I suspect is similar to the 3M blue stuff.

That would be a problem, as I live in okinawa, japan and there are no Ace Hardware stores... Sad [:(]

What sort of off base shopping is there for hobby stuff there? I would imagine that Tamiya, Hasegawa, Gunze and other such product lines would be easy to find.

We have a Tamiya hobby and another hobby shop that I go to every payday, but they are out of my walking distance. the other option is to go to the next base about a hour bus ride away. the local PX does not carry much in the way of hardware store stuff.

Old School Method: you can make any masking tape low tack by first applying it to your forehead or the inside of your forearm or to your trouser leg.

Saw a segment on the DIY Channels 'Cool Tools' show about Shurtape's CP-60 delicate surface masking tape.   The segment showed what appeared to be Tamiya tape on a typical masking tape sized roll.   The voice-over talked about how thin the tape was and how easily it conformed to irregular surfaces and how paint didn't seep at burnished down edges.   It sure sounded like Tamiya tape.

Anyone else familiar with the product?

I googled Shurtape and found the product description,  just need to find a local supplier.   Found suppliers who will sell me in case lots.  Price per roll is comparable with 3M products.   I need to go hit the dedicated paint stores in the area; ICI, Sherwin Williams, & PPG.
